Definition
Revenue cycle management (RCM) covers every administrative and financial step tied to a patient account. It runs from scheduling, eligibility, and authorization through coding, claim submission, payment posting, denial work, and patient collections.
Why it matters
Every stage feeds the next, so a defect at registration can surface weeks later as a denial. Weak RCM shows up as rising days in A/R, repeat denials, and balances written off after appeal windows close. Strong RCM catches errors at the stage that creates them.
Example
A front desk never re-verifies a patient’s new plan. The claim denies for eligibility 3 weeks later, and the practice must rebill the correct payer before the filing limit.
