Change Healthcare is now part of Optum, a UnitedHealth Group company. Optum sells a large clearinghouse network, revenue cycle software, and outsourced RCM services, mostly to health systems. TruCare serves practices, groups, MSOs, and digital health with one platform and one team.
How they differ
- Scale: Optum reports 2,400+ payer connections and about $75B in net patient revenue managed.
- Resilience: The February 2024 cyberattack on Change Healthcare disrupted claims nationwide and affected 192.7M people. Many practices now weigh vendor concentration when they choose a partner.
- Credentialing: We found no credentialing service at Optum. TruCred handles payer enrollment.
- Pricing: Optum does not publish pricing. TruCare publishes rates from 2.49% of collections.
Where they overlap
Both process claims for medical practices, and both cover eligibility, claim submission, and remittance. Both offer outsourced RCM work, though Optum focuses on hospitals and large multispecialty groups.
Choose TruCare if
You want a hands-on partner sized for a practice or group, with intake, billing, and credentialing in one place. TruCare also checks eligibility before the visit, which prevents many denials.
Choose Change Healthcare (Optum) if
You are a large enterprise that wants one vendor at national scale across clearinghouse, coding software, and outsourced services. Optum was named a leader in 2025 assessments by Everest Group and IDC.
Questions to ask on your demo
- Continuity: What is your backup plan if a clearinghouse goes down?
- Credentialing: Is provider enrollment included in the service?
- Contact: Who is our day-to-day contact, and how quickly do they respond?
The bottom line
Optum offers national scale. TruCare offers a closer relationship and credentialing on the same platform. After 2024, many practices ask every vendor about backup clearinghouses and downtime plans, and that is a fair question for both.
