Definition
The billing provider is the entity that bills for a service and gets paid for it. It is often a group practice using a type 2 organizational National Provider Identifier (NPI) and its tax identification number (TIN). It appears in item 33 of the CMS-1500 and loop 2010AA of the 837.
Why it matters
The billing NPI, tax ID, and address must match the payer’s enrollment file. Under HIPAA 5010, the billing provider address must be a street address, and a PO box belongs in the pay-to address. Mismatches lead to rejections, denials, or misrouted payments.
Example
A group moves offices but updates only its billing system. Claims carry the new address while the payer’s file shows the old one, so claims reject until enrollment is updated.
